VOCES' Reaction to the Senate Confirmation of Andrew Wheeler as EPA Administrator
March 1, 2019

Statement from Linda Escalante, spokesperson for VOCES:

"The Environmental Protection Agency exists to ensure that communities in the United States have clean and safe air, water, and land by protecting them from harmful chemicals, toxic pollutants, and other threats to public health and the environment. The head of the EPA, at a minimum, must strive to protect the health and safety of families across the nation. Unfortunately, former coal industry lobbyist Andrew Wheeler doesn’t meet this most basic qualification for the job.

During his time as acting EPA Administrator, Wheeler has sought to loosen power plant pollution standards for mercury, arsenic, and lead, which disproportionately harm children and pregnant women; has refused to adopt clean drinking water standards for the harmful chemicals PFOS and PFOA; and refused to ban the carcinogen, methylene chloride, from everyday paint thinners. The fact of the matter is, Andrew Wheeler values industry more than the health and wellbeing of our families and is unfit to serve the American people as EPA Administrator."
