Statement from VOCES in reaction to the end of the Government Shutdown
Federal workers return to the important work of safeguarding our public health and our environment
WASHINGTON – Following the announcement of an agreement to reopen the government after the longest shutdown in history, Linda Escalante at Voces Verdes, issued the following statement:
“After 35 days of unnecessary pain for hundreds of thousand of families who depend on government paychecks, our federal workers can return to their posts, ensuring the safety of our factories and food, monitoring toxic chemicals in our air and water, and managing our treasured public lands.
“In the next three weeks, we urge leadership in both parties to take measures that will provide humane and common-sense solutions for millions of immigrants who came to our country, often fleeing violence and in need of refuge, to seek a better future for their families.
“Voces calls for this shutdown to be an episode in the history of our country that is never repeated so that our government can continue to protect our public health and our environment.”
